1. How would you describe the “American Dream?” To me, the American Dream is something that a minuscule amount of the United States population actually acquires. In my opinion, it's more of an idea and can only be obtained through luck. This means that people immigrate to America based on this "American Dream" yet, most people do not always fulfill it. It's the optimistic who take on the journey toward it, yet most find it to be unobtainable in the end and sometimes even fall into a life of poverty instead of wealth, investing in this "dream". Yes, of course, there is the idea that you can build yourself up and that the freedom that the U.S. provides allows you to do so, however, if we look at it from a 1920s perspective, only those in fortunate circumstances will win the fight for wealth. When I see an eye-catching book cover it brings me nostalgia. I think back to when I was a kid roaming up and down the aisles of Barnes and Noble looking for a novel that caught my eye. Believe it or not, l il ' Shea was actually an AVID reader when she was younger, haha. I remember diving into complex books at a young age just because I wanted to. This was obviously at a time however before rigorous schedules, IB academics, and just the overall STRESS that accompanies growing up came into play! All a kid had to do (in my case) was play tennis religiously, do homework, and read for fun! The simple life (which I'm sure we all miss)!  Anyways, when I would look for a new book to read I would do the only thing a kid with no smartphone/internet could do which was gauge whether the books would be interesting based off of their covers. I was in fact "judging the books by their covers". " The Dark Side of Storytelling" by Suzanne Duncan Summary of the Talk: The main idea of the Ted Talk was that overtime our stories are negatively impacting us. Suzanne is a story skeptic. She explains what happens when our "protective imagination drives a false narrative." She states that "sometimes, the everyday stories we tell ourselves - and how we think about our roles in those stories - can do more harm than good." She supports this argument with the following ideas: 1. The Characterization of Mr. Hyde: From chapter 2: Mr. Utterson stepped out and touched him on the shoulder…, ending with ...he had unlocked the door and disappeared into the house. In this excerpt, Hyde is described as a creature-like person. In his exchange with Mr. Utterson, he snarls, hisses, and laughs savagely. He also uses sudden, nervous movements that at times startle Utterson. The lawyer describes him as looking frightened at the beginning of their conversation, yet then Mr. Hyde is able to cooly answer any of Mr. Utterson's questions. Mr. Hyde's demeanor is definitely more aggressive and his character definitely acts as if he has something to hide as he fumbles to get inside the lab. His speech is very abrupt and questioning of Utterson. This reveals that maybe Hyde has a side of him that wants to learn more about the outside world, which could either be a good or bad thing.
